Instructions

  • Prepare the tofu first by slicing it into small cubes and cooking it in an oil-greased pan until it turns light brown in color before setting it aside.

Alternative Method: Tofu Pizza on the Grill

Tofu Pizza
Fresh, colorful ingredients are the key to a flavorful tofu pizza.

To prepare a mouthwatering Grilled Tofu Pizza with a smoky twist, start by preheating your grill to a medium-high heat of around 400°F/200°C. While the grill heats up, roll out your pizza dough on a floured surface to your preferred thickness and brush one side with olive oil. In a bowl, combine tofu cubes with minced garlic, dried oregano, salt, and pepper, ensuring an even coating. Once the grill is ready, place the pizza dough on the grates, oiled side down, and grill for 2-3 minutes until it develops grill marks and firms up slightly. Flip the dough using tongs or a grill spatula and swiftly spread tomato sauce over the grilled side. Sprinkle vegan mozzarella cheese, seasoned tofu cubes, bell peppers, red onion, and cherry tomatoes on top. Close the grill lid and cook for an additional 5-7 minutes, allowing the crust to turn golden and the toppings to cook to perfection. Carefully remove the pizza from the grill using a spatula and garnish with fresh basil leaves and a drizzle of olive oil. Slice and savor this delectable Grilled Tofu Pizza for a flavorful and smoky take on the classic dish.

Serving Suggestions

Begin the meal with a classic touch by opting for Miso Soup, introducing a brothy, umami-rich essence that primes the palate without overshadowing the pizza’s flavors. For a refreshing contrast, Daikon Salad offers a light and crunchy element to counterbalance the hearty pizza toppings.

For those seeking a heartier addition, Yakisoba, stir-fried noodles with a satisfying chewiness, serves as an excellent side, enhancing the overall meal experience. Ajitama Eggs, with their mild yet rich flavor, can be presented as a side dish that complements the subtle taste of tofu.

If a meaty side is desired, Kalmi Kabab, featuring spiced and  creamy skewered kababs, introduces an exciting interplay of textures and flavors alongside the Tofu Pizza. Gyoza, as an appetizer, mirrors some pizza ingredients, creating a thematic continuity throughout the meal.

To cleanse the palate between bites, opt for Oat Milk or Soy Milk, providing mild and slightly sweet options that harmonize with the pizza without overwhelming it. Pickled items like QUICK PICKLES or Sushi Ginger contribute sharpness and acidity, creating a well-balanced counterpoint to the tofu’s mildness.

For a spicy and robust addition, a small portion of Kimchi Stew (Kimchi Jjigae) can complement the meal, especially for those who enjoy a bit of heat with their pizza. Conclude the dining experience on a sweet note with Apple Crumble, offering a comforting sweetness and contrasting texture to the savory pizza.

Cooking Tips

Tofu Pizza
Grilling tofu pizza: the art of creating smoky plant-based delight.

The foundation of any good pizza is, of course, the crust. Whether you decide to make it from scratch or opt for a pre-made base, aim for a golden-brown finish that offers a satisfying crunch yet yields to every bite. This structural integrity is especially important when topping it with something as moisture-rich as tofu.

Tofu tends to be a bit on the soft and bland side, but this is precisely where its beauty lies – it’s a sponge waiting to soak up whatever flavors you present it with. Pressing your tofu is key; it’s like coaxing the excess water away so that it can better embrace the marinade or seasonings you choose. Whether it’s zesty Italian herbs or a bold Asian-inspired sauce, let your tofu bask in these flavors for a while before it hits the oven.

When it comes to spreading your sauce on the base, a light hand can prevent sogginess. Follow this with a generous layer of your marinated tofu, cut into bite-sized pieces for even flavor and texture throughout. A judicious choice of veggies can add not only splashes of color but also dimensions of flavor – think caramelized onions for sweetness, bell peppers for crunch, and perhaps a handful of spinach for earthiness.

One of my favorite personal touches is scattering dollops of vegan ricotta or a sprinkle of nutritional yeast just before serving. It adds a subtle cheese-like experience without overpowering the delicate star ingredient.

While crafting this pie, do remember the oven is your ally. A hot oven will ensure a crisp crust and perfectly melded toppings. But keep an eye on your creation, as the line between perfectly done and overdone can often be a matter of minutes — an attentiveness born out of care and the aspiration to serve nothing but the best.
