Step 1: Prepare the ingredients

  • 4 slices of soft white bread (crusts removed)
  • 2 bell peppers (red, yellow, or a mix), thinly sliced
  • Olive oil for brushing and sautéing
  • Salt and pepper to taste
  • Cheese of your choice (mozzarella, provolone, or cheddar work well)
  • Optional additions: sliced tomatoes, lettuce, onions, pickles, mustard, or mayonnaise

Step 2: Sauté the peppers Heat some olive oil in a pan over medium heat. Add the sliced peppers, season with salt and pepper, and sauté until they are tender and slightly caramelized. Set aside to cool.

Step 3: Prepare the tramezzini Brush one side of each slice of bread with olive oil. On the other side of two slices, arrange the sautéed peppers and cheese. If you’re using any optional additions, add them on top of the peppers and cheese. Top with the remaining slices of bread, oiled side out.

Step 4: Grill the tramezzini Place the prepared tramezzini on a baking sheet and put another baking sheet on top to press them down. Bake in the oven at 180 degrees C (360 degrees F) for about 10-15 minutes or until the bread is toasted and the cheese is melted.

Note: The cooking time and temperature may vary depending on your oven.

Step 5: Serve These tramezzini are best served hot. You can cut each tramezzini in half and serve them as is, or with a side salad or soup.

About Tramezzini with Peppers

Tramezzini with Peppers
The tramezzini ready to be grilled on the indoor grill

The star of this recipe is the pepper filling, which is sautéed to perfection before being layered with cheese and other ingredients between two slices of tramezzini bread. The assembled sandwich is then grilled on an indoor grill, resulting in a dish that’s crispy on the outside, and juicy and cheesy on the inside.

Indoor Grill Cooking Tips

  • Preheat your grill: This ensures even cooking and a perfect crust.
  • Choose the right bread: A soft, crustless bread like tramezzini works best for this sandwich.
  • Layer wisely: Don’t overload the sandwich; it could make it difficult to eat.
  • Press down: Use a panini press or a heavy skillet to press down the sandwich for a crispy crust.
  • Clean after use: Regular cleaning prevents buildup and maintains the quality of your grill.

Serving Suggestions

  • With a side of chips: A classic pairing for any sandwich.
  • Paired with a fresh salad: A light salad can balance out the hearty tramezzini.
  • Alongside a bowl of soup: A hot bowl of your favorite soup makes for a comforting meal.
  • With a glass of iced tea: A refreshing drink to complement the meal.
  • Served with pickles: For an extra tangy kick.
