Gyudon Recipe Yoshinoya - Beef Rice Bowl

This dish is a favorite among many Japanese people. It is inexpensive and easy to make. It begins by sautéeing thin slices of beef in oil. Then, add sliced beef, sugar, mirin, soy sauce, and dashi, which is a sweet sauce made with soy. When gyudon is done, the dashi should be diluted with sake, so it won't have a bitter taste.

Ingredients

  • 7 ounces beef sliced into thin strips or bite-sized pieces
  • 1 small onion sliced thickly (about ½ inch)
  • 1-2 servings steamed rice freshly cooked

For sauce

Toppings (optional)

  • Red pickled ginger or beni shoga
  • Seven spice powder or shichimi togarashi

Instructions

  • Combine the sauce ingredients in a saucepan and bring it to a boil. Add the onions and cook for 1 minute.
  • Add the beef. Reduce the heat and let it simmer until the beef is done (about 10-15 minutes). Let it cool to develop the flavors, and then reheat (skip this step if you’re in a hurry).
  • Pour over the prepared rice and add your choice of toppings (optional).
  • Enjoy it!

Notes

Depending on the type of Gyudon you choose, you can have it prepared differently at home. Most gyudon restaurants are open 24 hours, and you can also order a special dish. In addition to a basic bowl of gyudon, you can add a variety of toppings to it. Some of these toppings include Beni-shoga, seven-spice powder, and raw egg. Almost any gyudon restaurant will have these toppings available.
